Interactive Communications Class
"NO LIMITS BLACKJACK"
March 2005

For Interactive Communications class, we were to take printed pages of code for Adobe Director and the programmer of one of our two groups had the task of rewriting the code and fixing the deliberate errors within.

We had two teams, the other being ran by Jack Montalto, who later worked with us on our Capstone Project: "Sin Harvest". Their team did a Zelda-Themed Blackjack Game. Our programmer was Travis Cooley, who had some previous experience doing so.

Since I had passed out cds of audio I had done, I got picked for sounds and music. My soundtrack consisted of 14 tracks, 10 normal in-game background music songs, a bonus song, a hidden mario song, the death scene (funeral march) and the title screen music.

Brian Hicks basically scanned a deck of cards and Jon Franz was this random guy that showed up and became our play tester. Travis was the programmer, Todd Flanagan did all of the cool industrial graphics, and I sub-employed friends Becky Stephenson and Will Henry in my free time to help with sound effects, made from real life situations, and character voices. The sound effects had faked audience clips we had done using our voices overdubbed to a near infinite amount, and clinging spoons on wine glasses full of water, etc.

This was our first attempt in college at a video game. Since the programmer was keen on the act of overdoing it, and so was I, we tackled this mission like a boss. There were hidden cheats I've never really messed with but just discovered today in 2015 ten years later there was an option to turn them on, which is off by default. That's what I get for my masterful attention to detail.

The characters could be selected from the audio menu as well as the music tracks. The voiceover characters included: Preacher, Redneck, Stoner, Valley Girl, Gay Guy, Pimp, Tough Guy, and the Announcer (who announced himself). There were of course hidden characters that either were not that funny, not well done (The Computer Voice/Creed Wannabe Band Voice), or were too offensive (The Asian Guy).

If you would like to try out this game, the full executable structure is available zipped, or an .exe file installer is also available. You can instead listen to all of the voices or download a zip of them at once.

Broadcast Graphics Class
"G-CHIP INFOMERCIAL"
March 2005

For Broadcast Graphics Class, we learned basic techniques of video editing and things such as outlining projects. We were given a list the second half of the quarter to choose a project from. All of these projects involved a personal approach and all of them required original material and footage. We were also required to use what we had learned from 3D Modelling class the previous quarter and come up with one single model somehow animating within the final video. The project I chose was a minimum AND a maximum of 30 seconds. We could not go over. I went over, and still was the only one to score 100. Not to brag, but quite a bit of work went into this, all surrounding a central series of cheap punchlines. The project was to sell a made up project. Since it was required to be fabricated, I decided to go all out and make something more fantasy than practical and came up with an advertisement for a chip you have surgically implanted in your head which functions as an all-in-one gaming system. My major was to be game design, so it was only fitting.

The 3D model I chose was the actual chip. All of the files, including the nintendo covers, that went into this project are available now on my website. I have compressed and downsized certain things like some of the videos, but you'll get the general idea. The folder graphic to the left was the basic setup of my project folder. Everything was planned out and outlined to go into it's own folder. Since I had experience with Sonic Foundry software, although the class was to teach Adobe Premiere and After Effects, I completely cheated and used what I was familiar with. So not only did I use Sonic Foundry Vegas to cheat on my project, it tripled the allowed maximum amount of time and due to humor STILL scored highest at 100%!

So the time came to animate 3D to its fullest. Other projects had a lot better models I think, but the videos were about 15 seconds. This actually more than likely was the goal we were supposed to set out, but I decided to give it a song and make more scenes after figuring out the right commands to animate. I needed help with the actual bone structure, which probably would hold true today if I re-attempted 3D animation. It's just a public service announcement of a derranged world from a rat's perspective, about the man bringing him down. It took about 5 weeks so don't expect too much from this n00b.

This project brought a couple of friends at the time into its equation. I had a much longer script, so the final version made less sense. It was basically if the modern world had forrest gump. One scene I didn't get to do was from The Exorcist, "You're mother sxcks cxcks in hell, Forrest" instead of Ferris. It was basically just 2000's nonsense carried over from the 90's with drugs. I was trying to make it make fun of itself and Forrest's lover comes out of the closet in the end. There was a teaser to this trailer, and it housed a third friend, but it wasn't good. It was too not funny to show, though I may add it with the 8 minute blooper reel someday.
